Hi guys:
I've been making practice scarf joints without a lot of success.
First I made a jig where I placed a belt sander upside-down on a bench and
built a table and guide fence on it. That did not yield acceptable results
as I had no way to keep constant pressure on the plywood.
I then tried scarfing by hand with the belt sander and that test piece
looked somewhat better, but still unacceptable to me.
Anyhow, I came across the following links and am passing them along in case
some of you are also somewhat frustrated with scarfing plywood.

Also of interest (I think) is the following quote I saw in the Mirage
Aircraft Builder Newsletter
http://www.mirageaircraft.com/newsletter-august-2000.htm which states:
"It is further recommended that gluing surfaces should be machined smooth
and true with planers, jointers, or special miter
saws. In any case, the FAA says that 'Sandpaper must never be used to
smooth softwood surfaces that are to be glued.'
(AC 43.13-1A)."
Anyway, your thoughts and/or tips on how to make good, clean scarf joints
would be welcome. I bought the EAA book and video on woodworking but their
demonstration on making a scarf joint was brief and would require one to
purchase a big piece of equipment. In my case that's out of the question as
the "Minister of Finance" has enacted laws that prevent me from doing so.
BTW, if any of you know of someone who's thinking about building a RANS
S-16 Shekari http://www.rans.com/images/S-16_side_pants.jpg pass along my
email address as I have a control surfaces kit completely assembled
(includes flaps, ailerons, elevators and the rudder). This can save someone
a couple months worth of work. I'm asking $2,500 plus shipping or will
consider trading for anything Fly Baby related of an equal value.
Workmanship is top notch.
