There aint no flex in the gear.  OK, there must be a little, but the flex
in the tires makes any deformation of the vees negligible.

If the wood is as strong as sprice then you are OK.  I used douglas fir
3/4 inch boards and ripped them the hard way to make 1/4 inch boards.
