Know what? I built mine from red oak planks. Got 'em at a Home Depot and
I've got about eighty dollars in the whole pile (not including the T-88
adhesive). I realize that I'm probably looking at a weight penalty, but I
don't think it's out of hand. It's also a bit harder to work (I'm just now
getting a Forstner bit set up for drilling the angled holes for the axle), but
not impossible, and they're gonna be bomb-proof.
I chased various fir and spruce supplies around for a long time before I
finally said "to hell with it," and went for the oak.
