Parts size, of course, should be what Pete specifies.
Otherwise, I don't think the size of the original lumber makes any
difference, other than the amount of wood you get for your dollar. When
you buy a "2x4" at the hardware store, the actual size of the wood is
something like 1.5" x 3.5" since, I believe, the "2x4" size refers to
its pre-milling dimension. In any case, the only place I've seen this
sort of thing is in the construction "dimensioned" lumber. I've bought
a lot of oak and cherry at various lumber yards, and they've always been
spot-on. If you find a lumber yard that sells spruce, it'll probably
have the exact dimensions as well. Know the requirements of
aircraft-grade wood before going this route, though.
In any case, if you buy spruce from an aircraft supplier, you get
exactly the dimension specified.
