William,
Yes,I purchaced the 4340E from ACSP.
3 FT 4340E RECT. FLAT 1/4"X1-1/2" $31.11 + shipping.
Could'nt pay anyone enough money to bend it so I went to the local tool
shop and purchaced a 12 ton hydrolic press and bent it myself, using
oak and pine back-up blocks along with the extra leaf spring as
suggested on page 9-6 part "A" in Bowers plans.
I also had Steve, at REPLICRAFT, (who is making all the hardware) make
up the wing wire anchor plates from 1.25" 4130.
I will bend these up the same way, then have them heat treated when I
get the wings finished.
Do you know of anyone who has successfully mounted the 5X500 Cleveland
wheel and brake assemblys to the FB axle?
They have taper bearings (like on an automobile) and require a threaded
wheel nut for bearing pre-load.
This means that the axle will have to be threaded for this axle nut
which will interfere with the bolt that passes through the end of the
axle to secure the 4130 that the wing flying wires attach to!!!
Steve at REPLICRAFT has been working on this modification for 5 months
without success.
The other option that I have is to buy a pair of J-3 wheel and brake
assemblies and use the stock axle.
Any thoughts or suggestions on this subject?
Thanks,
Steve
